Who We Are

Thrulines is an online magazine created by the Magazine II class in the graduate journalism program at Columbia College Chicago. The authors of the inaugural edition are:

Paige Gray graduated from Indiana University with a degree in English and is currently working toward her Master’s in journalism. As an undergraduate, Paige worked on the Indiana Daily Student in all areas of production. She would eventually like to write news and feature stories for a large newspaper or magazine.

Rachel Green is a freelance writer who lives in Chicago. Her work has
appeared in Reservoir and Creating Community Connections. She graduated in 2004 with a B.A. in English from Ohio University, where she fell in love with the Italian language and gained an insatiable wanderlust.

Born in Chicago and raised in the suburb of Oak Forest, David Lanzafame earned his B.A. in English at St. Xavier University. Currently he’s writing for Frankfort Station, Homer Horizon, Orland Prairie, and New Lenox. As of right now he’s back in Chicago at Columbia College and representing like a true suburbanite.

Freelance writer Jason Porterfield has authored over twenty nonfiction children’s books for the Rosen Publishing Group, on topics ranging from pirates to steroids. A Virginia native, he earned his B.A. in English, history, and religion from Oberlin College in Ohio. He currently resides in Chicago.

Andrew Reilly is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in Reservoir and No Touching. He holds a B.S. in Business Computer Systems from Bradley University and wants to learn to play the violin. He lives in Chicago.

Faculty Advisors Daniel Sinker and Bryan Smith are both real world practioners of the storytelling form offered on Thrulines. As the primary feature writer for Chicago Magazine, Smith has won numerous awards for his narrative stories and has had his work included in the book anthologies Best Newspaper Writing and Best American Sports Writing. As the founder of Independents’ Day Media, Sinker has pushed the boundaries of independent publishing through the magazine Punk Planet and its book imprint, Punk Planet Books. His publications have been nominated for more than 15 awards.
